Making A Contribution

In a recent article from a family focused organization, I read about an epidemic of young people feeling a sense of resignation, leading to checking out from normal activities and even feeling depressed, hanging out the basement playing video games and munching on junk food.  What we are seeing in today's very child-centric parenting, is that young people have been well-cared-for, they have been given all they need and more, but what they are missing is an opportunity to give back.  There can be a lack of purpose, a sense of uselessness when young people do not know that they have a unique gift to share with the world.  How can we help young people figure out their place in this world?

It begins with helping them know their own unique talents and strengths.  Young people come alive and become passionate and enthusiastic when they realize they have something that the world needs.  They have gifts that can help others and they will be excited to see how they can give back to this world.  Help your child to identify their personal interests by giving them chances to practice helping others and giving - maybe it's raking a neighbor's leaves or collecting canned goods for the food pantry.  Maybe it's making lovely cards for residents in the nursing home or even visiting to sing songs or play games with someone who is lonely.  Give your children a purpose by celebrating their talents and showing them that the world needs them!
